1st Generation – Ancient Fishing Kites.
Invented thousands of years ago by South Sea Islanders. Hand woven from palm leaves. Flown on a hand
line out of a dug-out canoe near the reefs. The kite holds bait up near the surface to attract predatory fish.

2nd Generation – Post-War Fishing Kites.
The fishing kite system was re-invented by US game fishermen in the 1940’s who wanted to improve
offshore big game fishing by designing new fishing kites with modern materials and also exploiting multiple
rods, lines and reels. As ever, the idea is to hold bait up near the sea surface to attract marlin, sailfish, etc.
Sometimes rubber helium balloons are attached to keep these kites up in nil wind, but if the fragile latex
balloons burst, or the wind gets too high, they can still fall into the sea. Often used to compete in big game
fishing tournaments.
Who is this best for? Offshore big game fishermen who wish to use their skill in kite flying to improve their
chances of catching elusive big game fish. Amateur fishermen, or professional tournament skippers. Very
challenging, but highly productive once mastered.

3rd Generation - Fishing Helikites.
The Fishing Helikite was based on the novel Helikite design, patented in 1993 by Sandy Allsopp of Allsopp
Helikites Ltd, England. It is a unique, lighter-than-air, high wind capable, combination of tough plastic
balloon and kite sail. Helikites were first used for big game fishing in the Florida Keys in 2024 and
immediately it was realised that they eliminated all the trouble and risks associated with previous fishing
kites, because they flew themselves automatically in winds from 0 - 25 mph, whatever the boat was doing.
They also fly perfectly from shore, even near cliffs, and in difficult winds that would bring down all other
